Why settle it before the trip at all

A trip has a way of filling itself. At check-in you receive a key and a room number. That number goes into the thread, and it is the only task the day asks of you. She does not set out until it is there. Once she has, she says so in a message of her own, and across central Amsterdam her journey is forty to sixty minutes, so she arrives close to the hour you fixed weeks earlier. If the evening has to be given up

The notice given is the only thing that counts. Called off more than twenty-four hours before the booked time, the whole deposit comes back. Inside the final day, before she has set out, half of it is kept as fee already earned and half is repaid. After she has left for your hotel, all of it is kept. Two things soften even that: if the hour is taken by another guest, the deposit is repaid in full, and if you can show the loss was smaller than the share kept, only the smaller figure is kept.
